HOW TO BECOME A MASTER: Tool, Lateralus. Black Then White; Embrace The Random.

This post is about the Tool song Lateralus, about the genius in which it was constructed, and about its core theme: learn the rules, then BEND them; become a master.

Themes

There are many themes/lessons within Lateralus:

  • The universe is based on a set of rules.
  • When you begin studying the rules, simple explanations are the easiest to grasp.
  • After further study the “rules” become more complex, simple explanations begin breaking down.
  • If you truly desire to be a master, respect the foundation: (black and white,) respect the complex beauty, (colors,) then, blaze your own path, become a master: (spiral out.)

My first comment on the song is the Fibonacci sequence Tool embedded, hypnotically, purposely into the song Lateralus.

The Fibonacci Sequence: a series of numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, … The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it.

This series of numbers, Fibonacci sequence, describes how the universe is constructed, (the mathematics of God Himself.) The rules if you will.

Spirals

By the rules of Fibonacci, spirals are created:

Fibonacci spirals can be seen all through the universe, from the smallest to the largest of things.

Black and White VS Color

BLACK THEN WHITE ARE ALL I SEE IN MY INFANCY.

Literally: a human baby is believed to be color-blind.

Metaphorically: When man begins learning anything, a solid foundation is helpful, essential. As he/she grows in knowledge, as he/she experiences new things, new colors emerge, (new information.) Only a fool would reject the colors he/she sees with their own eyes.

RED AND YELLOW THEN CAME TO BE,

Literally: a human baby begins seeing colors at around 5 months.

Metaphorically: When man begins learning anything new,  a “black-and-white” foundation becomes too-rigid to explain everything, eventually a rigid “black-and-white” foundation will stunt his/her growth and lead to very undesirable outcomes.

Mastery

I could go in a million directions from here.

I could write about how “black-and-white” represents the left/right paradigm in American politics, color representing common ground.

I could write about the rigidness of The Old Testament, vs the love of The New Testament how the Pharisees represented “black-and-white,” Jesus represented color.

I could write about how modern Christianity is often a “black and white” rigid set of rules, in rejection of the “color,” the adaptability and warmth Christ represented.

But…

I choose to write about mastery, and the path to mastery which can be applied to all forms of human knowledge. My vehicle for writing about mastery is a topic I’ve studied extensively: fighting. Here are some words from my vault:

Bruce Lee (11/27/1940- 7/20/1973) MASTER of martial arts, master of hand-to-hand combat. His invention, the fighting form he developed is unbeatable. Bruce called his style: “JEET KUNE DO.” JKD is based on these two sentences:
“All FIXED set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability.
The Truth is outside of all fixed patterns.”

Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, born AMERICAN. This is an important concept to grasp: Bruce Lee was born an AMERICAN, his fighting form, his martial art based on his ideas is AMERICAN, at its core.

When Bruce was younger, he lived in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong he studied kung fu, fencing, dancing, acting, among other things.

These formative years can be thought of as his “black and white” days. In these days he studied all these things under various mentors, learned their rules.

When Bruce Lee became a man, he moved to the United States and began teaching traditional Asian martial arts, then, something magick happened, Bruce began to ask questions…

Is the Hong Kong brand of Chinese Kung Fu The Truth? Is it the “end-all-be-all” of human fighting knowledge? Can any FIXED pattern, FIXED system be COMPLETE?

His answer, “NO!”

A few years ago, I responded to a blog post entitled: I DO NOT LIKE BRUCE LEE. In it the author proposed Bruce Lee was a “false prophet” because Bruce never finished his kung fu training, (style called Wing Chun,) in Hong Kong.

I think you’re missing the point of what Bruce Lee’s biggest accomplishment was.

It wasn’t that Bruce Lee was a “freak of nature,” as you put it, but, that Bruce said, “there is NO perfect fighting form, they ALL have limitations.”

Wing Chun.

I know nothing about Wing Chun(WC) except what I’ve seen in the movies, BUT, that does not mean I am not qualified to comment.

Does WC teach:
About wrestling?
About locks, throws?
How to kick? All possible kicks, knees?
All possible punches, strikes, elbows?

Is WC the best form for:
a 95 pound woman?
Kareem Abdul Jabbar?
Arnold Schwarzenegger?
A fat guy?

Does Wing Chun teach:
Confidence?
Nutrition?
Weight training?
Conditioning?
Chi?
Ethics?
Strategy?

Does WC teach how to pick up the nearest weapon and use it?
All weapons?

Does WC teach you how to fight a strong, slow opponent,
a boxer?
a wrestler?
a BIG wrestler?
a long armed lightning fast opponent?

Does WC teach how to choose your battlefield?

Does WC teach ESP?

How to read body language, emotions?
How to know what your opponent is going to do next?
How to roll with a punch?
How to condition your body to absorb blows (like medicine ball training)?

Bruce Lee looked at ALL of these things and said, “Gee Mohammad Ali has some value, Judo has some value, ju-jitsu has some value, nutrition has value, heavy bags, speed bags, footwork have VALUE.

Wing Chun is good information, but is it COMPLETE?

IS ANY SYSTEM COMPLETE?
IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Did your wrestling training have ANY value? (addressed to the author of the post I was responding to.)

If Bruce were alive today, he would study pavlovian triggers, hypnosis and MANY other things.

He would learn how to use physiology to put him in a peak state before combat.

I could go on and on.

You are probably right, Bruce was probably not a WC master, BUT, I guarantee you: he could have defeated any master on Earth at the time he was alive, (at least within weight class) for one reason; he WANTED it.

Bruce wanted to be the toughest guy on the planet.

He poured everything he had into that.
He read everything he could, learned everything he could, ate right, trained like a mad man.

Like you said “a first world doctor in the third world,” a god among insects.

He learned HIS fighting form for HIS:
body type,
intelligence,
speed,
size,
strength.

What is fighting? What is a martial art?

My definition would be the ability to break an opponents will to fight, without a gun, in a physical confrontation.

I don’t believe in secret SPOOKY knowledge from Asia, it’s a myth, it’s bullshit.

If you’ve never hit the weight room.
If you’ve never ran 7 miles a day in combat boots.
If you’ve never put on 30 pounds of muscle using High Intensity Training.
If you’ve never learned footwork, or speed bag timing, or learned how to throw you’re whole body into a punch on a heavy bag.

You don’t have all the answers.

You’re just a pompous ass, skinny, weakling, thinking you’re bad without ever being in a real fight.

What fighting form is the best?

Fortunately, there is a petri-dish for that: the MMA.

If you’re right, a person learning PURE Wing Chun will become MMA champion.

Ridiculous.

No weight training, roadwork, nutrition, or any other knowledge ALLOWED.

I suspect you know your article is BS.
I suspect you wrote it to stir up the woodpile and get MMA enthusiasts to pay attention, that you don’t believe a word of your own article.

How do I know you don’t believe it?

Because your physique says you believe there is knowledge beyond dead Asians.

Jeet Kune Do, the philosophy, is The Truth because you can’t argue against it.

To argue for Wing Chun you would have to have one book, one large book that outlined EVERYTHING WC teaches.

Then those who read this book would automatically become PERFECT fighters.

It wouldn’t matter who the sifu was. Truth is truth, it requires no interpretation.

Those reading this magick WC book would not be allowed to learn ANYTHING else.

But here is the kicker:
Jeet Kune Do still encompasses the WC book, since JKD says find The Truth for yourself, every fighter on Earth would gravitate towards WC.

The words of Vince Lombardi and all other teachers would be burned. WC students would dominate the MMA.

Then JKD = WC.

Kinda silly.

Here is another way to look at it.

To say WC is perfect would mean that for the next 10,000 years ALL knowledge of fighting, nutrition, strength training EVERYTHING will stagnate.

Anything that is not growing is dying.
Anything that is not evolving is dying.

One of the characteristics of living things is the ability to EVOLVE.

To say WC is The Truth (in 2014) contradicts logic in that you can’t have: the ability to evolve AND be The Truth at the same time.

So if WC in 3014 is the same as WC in 2014 then WC is dead, since it is not evolving.

If 3014 WC is different, then 2014 WC is not the truth.

Then someone in 3014 could write an article about how they didn’t like YOU, because you assumed you had the truth, when the real truth is WC year 3014.

Only Jeet Kune Do is the truth since JKD says simply: do what works for you. Learn everything, choose what works.

So, by studying WC you are actually studying JKD by another name.

YOUR JKD is an extremely arrogant one, that says, there is no truth but WC.

Prediction:
in 100 years professional boxing will be dead- MMA (mixed martial arts,) is where we are going as a spectator sport.

In the next 50 years Karate and TKD will be in the minority, MMA training will be the studio for the next 10,000 years because MMA can evolve.

You probably know this as well, you seem like a smart guy.

WC is latin: a dead, root language. That doesn’t mean it will die out, it just means it will decline in popularity, as it should.

Teach MMA, you’re qualified.

Use your brand of WC to dominate the MMA, when you do, they will remember you the way I remember Bruce a VISIONARY.

I see Bruce, being not fully trained, as a strength, not a weakness.

Karate, TKD, and WC are ALL bullshit; true fighting is AMERICAN and it is called JKD or MMA.

Prove me wrong.

You have something Bruce never had: MMA.

If Bruce had MMA his students would OWN it, or he would be shown to be a false profit.

MMA proves Bruce Lee was right!

How come no pure Karate student, TKD student or WC student has EVER won in the MMA?

Because real fights don’t look anything like what is seen in those dojos.

Real fights are brutal nasty things, even more brutal than the MMA.
